What is a Power Take Off (PTO)?
In the refuse (waste management) industry, a Power Take-Off (PTO) unit is a crucial component that enables a truck's engine to power the hydraulic systems used to operate the body of the garbage truck — such as the compactor, lifters, tippers, and sometimes even the bin arms.
💡 How it works:
The PTO is typically mounted on the truck’s transmission.
When engaged (manually or automatically), it diverts engine power to drive a hydraulic pump.
This hydraulic pump then powers various actuators or cylinders to operate compaction and lifting mechanisms.
